WIC Breastfeeding Peer Helper – Part Time

Description:  Lorain County Public Health is seeking to hire a part-time Breastfeeding Peer Helper in the WIC Division. This is a part-time position with usual hours between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm Monday thru Friday with evenings and weekends as needed.    

FUNCTION

Under general supervision of the WIC Director, is responsible for providing breastfeeding support and education to pregnant and breastfeeding women, making referrals, and assisting with the breastfeeding activities of the WIC project.

JOB DUTIES

1.  Have ongoing contact with the pregnant or breastfeeding participants at the clinics, on the telephone, or by mail.

2.  Provide appropriate breastfeeding referrals. 

3.  Assist with group classes and attend breastfeeding support meetings.

4.  Serve as a breastfeeding resource person to WIC staff and participants.

5.  Assist with community outreach and bulletin boards

MAJOR WORK CHARACTERISTICS

Knowledge of:  clinical and office equipment, computer literacy in Microsoft Office and Google Suite, report compilation, and medical terminology.

Ability to:  communicate and relate to the public with positivity and patience; switch tasks quickly and efficiently; be a team player; open to cross-training; be reliable and timely; function according to agency and departmental policies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Has breastfed an infant exclusively or substantially for at least six months. Has been a former or current WIC participant. Possesses strong customer service skills with the ability to build lasting relationships with participants.

UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Personal vehicle required. Local travel between clinics or community sites as needed. Some evening or weekend opportunities for breastfeeding support groups or farm market voucher distributions.

SALARY: $13.60-$16.86/hour
