Health Education Specialist

FUNCTION

Under the general direction of Director of Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention, assess, plan, implement, and evaluate public health initiatives for topics including, but not limited to, injury prevention and chronic disease prevention. Ability to apply the population-based policy, systems, and environmental change concepts to strategies as necessary.

JOB DUTIES

  1. Plan, implement and evaluate initiatives to address health inequities and other health needs of defined populations
  2. Ability to build and maintain relationships with partnering individuals and agencies in the community-at-large
  3. Ability to lead or facilitate community coalitions and/or meetings with community members, healthcare systems, and other partnering agencies
  4. Collect, analyze, and interpret statistical, demographic, socio-cultural and other data
  5. Provide technical assistance and consultation to community groups, schools, private and public agencies, and professional groups
  6. Capacity to determine and execute appropriate methods for conveying ideas to individuals and groups
  7. Assist with public information and communication duties including written, spoken, and visual health promotions messaging; including, but not limited to, digital messaging on the website and social media platforms, presentations, scripts, media releases, and talking points for staff spokespeople
  8. Plan, prepare, and evaluate health awareness and educational messages and materials using appropriate software and community outreach methods
  9. Represent the agency in the community and at professional meetings within the community
  10. Serve as a subject matter expert to staff in regards to educational and health promotion theories and practice
  11. Perform other related duties as required
  12. Report upon directive in an emergency
  13. Conduct other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of: Health education theories & techniques; public relations; risk communication; social media; group process and facilitation
  • Ability to: Define problems; collect data; engage groups and individuals; build alliances among community members willing to work together to improve and promote healthy lifestyles and work toward eliminating health inequities; communicate in written and oral form; prepare concise and accurate reports; deal with many variables and determine specific actions; handle sensitive inquiries from officials and general public

Minimum Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree in public health, health education, health promotion, or other related fields

Preferred Qualifications:  Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) certificate.

Work Environment: Requires some travel. Some early morning, evening, and weekend assignments may be required.
