Definition: Under general direction of the Health Commissioner, assists the Health Commissioner in the administration and oversight of public health programs for Lorain County Public Health; provides health policy consultation on public health prevention issues to the Health Commissioner, Board of Health, department staff, citizens, public officials, community organizations, and partner agencies; in the absence of the Health Commissioner, may serve as the Health Commissioner designee; and performs other related work as required.
This position is in the unclassified management level class and is responsible to the Health Commissioner by:
This position is distinguished from the Health Commissioner in that the Health Commissioner is appointed by the Lorain County Public Health Board of Health to direct the health district and to carry out the policies of the Board of Health and possesses the powers, duties, and responsibilities relating to the preservation and protection of public health under the laws of the State of Ohio.
The Deputy Health Commissioner assists in directing the health district, and does not carry full powers, duties, and responsibilities relating to public health, but may act in the absence of the Health Commissioner.

Qualifications: A licensed physician, licensed dentist, a licensed veterinarian, licensed podiatrist, licensed chiropractor, or the holder of a master’s degree in public health or an equivalent master’s degree in a related health field as determined by the members of the board of health (ORC 3709.11).
Experience: Five years of responsible managerial experience in public health administration and leadership while demonstrating the skill levels listed in the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals at the senior management level. (Preferred)
Be in possession of a Valid Driver’s License for the State of Ohio with an acceptable driving record.

Physical Requirements and Unusual Working Conditions: Work is of a general office nature with fieldwork walking over uneven terrain and climbing stairs. Be able to lift objects of weight up to sixty (60) pounds.
